Excessive Sweating
Sweating (perspiration) is the process of removing fluid from the skin with the help of sweat glands. Body fluids mixed with salt are removed in order to regulate and maintain your internal body temperature. Sweat usually accumulates in your armpits, feet and palms
We are all born with about two to four million sweat glands. The number of sweat glands we have directly corresponds with how much we sweat. For example, during puberty, our glands are fully active especially in hot environments. Women usually have many more glands than men and they tend to sweat less. Men’s glands however, are often the most active because theirs release a higher amount of salt in their sweat which makes them perspire more.
As the outside temperature increases, so do our levels of secretion of sweat which in turn allows the body to regulate its natural temperature. If sweating is accompanied by fever, weight loss, chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations, a physician should be consulted. Such symptoms may indicate an underlying condition (such as hyperthyroidism). Excessive sweating can also be one of the signs of an overactive thyroid and should be medically checked.
