Pterygium Surgery
The word pterygium in Greek means 'little wing'. It is a layer of tissue that gets enlarged and abnormal, when the little vessels & connective tissues of your white eye membrane become thick.
This progressive tissue is called fibroblastic tissue. It progresses in stages, disrupting the aesthetics of the eye on one hand and leading to visual impairment on the other. Usually, it occurs inside the eye, near
A pterygium can affect both eyes, but it's not contagious - so you don't have to worry about anyone else in your family being able to catch it. But it can lead to permanent vision loss if not surgically intervened.
The most common symptom of the disease is a tissue that grows in the inner part of your eye. It can also come with symptoms such as itching or burning. The disease starts in the white part of the front of the eye and progresses to the cornea layer if not intervened. In the progression of fibroblastic tissue, which can cause astigmatism over time, the problem of visual deterioration also arises.
